Going to see the Blue Man Group at the Astor Place Theater was an amazing experience, especially being one of the first performances I’ve watched in a while. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. It was a completely non-verbal show with the only dialogue coming from props, not the actual performers. The show was heavily reliant on audience participation which made it very enjoyable to sit through. The group consisted of three men painted blue and dressed in all black. It started out with the silhouettes of each man playing the drums one at a time until they real revealed. They poured paint onto the drums while playing and created works of art by allowing canvases to be hit with different colors of paint.

Three men dressed in black with their faces painted blue, making music, creating art, and poking fun at contemporary media all the while being completely silent. These were my lasting impressions of the Blue Man Group performance created by Matt Goldman, Phil Stanton, and Chris Wink that has been taken place in Astor Place Theater for years. Though it was a silent performance with the only noise coming from the laughter of the audience, it did not hinder the overall comedy that was the basis of the performance. [click to continue…]

In a world where staying connected equals text messaging, Facebook, and e-mails, we often forget face-to-face communication. Blue Man Group, an electrifying off-Broadway production, delves into the world of communication in its own special way: without spoken words. A unique interactive experience, Blue Man Group is part concert, part comedy-act, and part art exhibition.
I was introduced to this show by a PBS special a few years ago that featured three men of similar physique, dressed in black clothing, and glossy blue from head to toe. I was enthralled by their peculiarity and had to see the show. Who’d guess that I would get a chance to experience the magic firsthand?!

In 1980, Blue Man Group staged their first show in New York City. Now nearly 30 years later the wildly successful group has grown to over 60 blue men. The show is currently being played in seven places around the world (New York, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Orlando, Berlin, and Zurich).
As soon as you enter the theater, you are surrounded by a tangle of tubes and you realize that this show won’t be like any other show you’ve ever seen. When the show starts you are immersed in an amazing performance of sights and sounds (even though no sounds come out of their Blue mouths). [click to continue…]

Don't let this blue face scare you. They are a gentle species.
It’s an easy recipe; you can try it at home. Apply face paint, a bald cap, and a black turtleneck. Be silent. Interact with humans for best results.
This is the simple formula that has allowed the Blue Man Group to conduct one of the most successful and inventive social psychology experiments in the world of theater consistently for nearly two decades. There’s no tinfoil, let alone CGI, but when the Blue Men get into costume, they become aliens, and through their eyes, we are able to see the strangeness of our own world. [click to continue…]
