Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind is an attempt to perform 30 plays in 60 minutes.  30 plays, ranging from happy to sad to slightly odd and confusing to a beautiful work of performance art, that The New York Neo-Futurists have written themselves.  Titles include: “a play for Tina Howe,” “apple and anger,” “inquisition,” “mad libs booty am free style for you,” and… 26 more.  The Neo’s are energetic acting group and from the very beginning, they set out to make you a part of their excitement.

The audience was fully interactive throughout the show, being able to choose the order of the plays by shouting a out a number from 1 to 30 from the list of plays, or menu, that they gave us (every play has a number).  Audience members were pulled up on stage to dance with the cast, to fill in blanks to a song, or a cast member would go have a short conversation with a member of the audience.  (Don’t be shy when you go!) The Odd Couple: The NY Neo-Futurists vs. The National Comedy Theatre

I had wanted to see the Neo-Futurists for some time, but was always too busy/lazy and never got around to asking for tickets. This particular week, though, it just seemed to make sense for no particular reason whatsoever. The Neos would appreciate this reasoning, I think. Also, another show popped up this time on the freelancers’ weekly email from Eric (monsieur Editor-in-Chief at High 5) — an improv night at the National Comedy Theatre — which piqued my interest. I had never heard of the place, but I like comedy about as much as the next guy, so I figured it couldn’t be all that bad. Impulsively, of course, I got tickets to both. When you first spot the KGB Bar, you may be slightly taken aback. In fact, craning your neck to try to see over the girl whose hat looks like a monster that’s eating her head, you may even doubt that it’s the the right address. Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind

If you have trouble sitting through a play without falling asleep or thinking of something else, then Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind is the perfect play for you. Actually, it’s 30 plays fit into 60 minutes, so you won’t even have time to fall asleep because each play lasts at most 3 minutes.
